Teaching Tradition During the Feast of Saint Domnius

As part of the Saint Domnius celebrations in Split, Makarun proudly participated in the public event “Učimo kuhati kao naše bake” held on May 5th at Prokurative.

During the workshop, children from local primary schools had the opportunity to learn how traditional makaruni are made by hand — guided by grandma (baba) Tanja, one of the guardians of this centuries-old Dalmatian tradition.

For many children, it was their first experience shaping pasta by hand and discovering that cooking can preserve stories, culture, and identity just as much as taste.

At Makarun, we believe traditions survive only when they are shared. Passing knowledge from one generation to another has always been part of Dalmatian family life, especially in the kitchen.

Watching young hands learn the same movements practiced for centuries in the village of Pupnat reminded us why preserving culinary heritage still matters today.

Sometimes the most meaningful form of sustainability is simply making sure traditions are not forgotten.
